Bernese Mittelland

Bern-Mittelland region is made up of the valley of the rivers Aare and Emme, some of the foothills of the Bernese Alps, as well as the plain around the capital Bern, and has many small farms and hilly forested regions with small to mid-sized towns scattered throughout.

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and the canton of Bern. It is located in the very center of the country, in the valley of the Aare River. The symbol of Bern is the bear depicted on the coat of arms of the city. Bern is notable for its old streets with galleries — this is a rare medieval city built according to a plan, so the streets here are unusually wide. The Old Town of Bern with its covered arcades is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Most interesting sights to see are :

Kunstmuseum — Museum of Art. The museum’s collection is made up of paintings, sculptures and art objects created before the end of the 19th century. Others include a collection of 14th-century Italian primitivists. Among the Impressionists are such masters as Monet, Manet, Cezanne and Delacroix, as well as several paintings by the great surrealists, including Salvador Dali. In the museum you will find paintings by Kandinsky, Matisse, Kirchner, Picasso and others, as well as contemporary Swiss artists.

The building of the Bernese casino was built at the beginning of the 20th century under the direction of the architects Paul Lindt and Max Hoffman for the city municipality. At the present time, many cultural events are held in the casino building, such as the performance of a symphony orchestra.

The Bundeshaus is the federal palace of Switzerland, where the federal parliament and the federal council sit.
The region is worth visiting because of it’s wonderfeul culture, history, Emmental world-known for its cheese and some exceptinal events like the famous Zibelemarit (Onion Market). This is the main annual festival in Bern, when, despite the food stalls and the rustic-sounding name, people can run along Spitalgasse, throw confetti and show off inflatable bananas. It is believed that this festival arose after the fire of 1405, when the inhabitants of neighboring Friborg helped the Bernese sort out the rubble and garbage, and in gratitude, the latter gave the inhabitants of Friborg the right to sell their onions here every autumn.
Apart from the Zibelemarit, the biggest festivity in Bern is the Fasnacht carnival, which takes place on the weekend between the grand festivities in Lucerne (before) and Basel (after).

In the spring and summer, inquire about the many cultural events, including the International Jazz Festival (in May). One of the best jazz schools in Switzerland is located in Bern. In June there is a contemporary dance festival, and in July there is a Gurten festival dedicated to rock, dance and folk music.
