Center – Loire Valley

The Loire Valley, which conjures up pictures of the famed Châteaux of the Loire erected by the monarchs of France over many centuries and still renowned to this day for its splendor and grandeur, is the most notable feature of the area.

Chenonceau, Chambord, Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry, and Blois are a few of the most well-known. There are also other less well-known chateaux, such as the one at Ussé, which is thought to have served as the model for the castle in The Sleeping Beauty. The 100 Years War, during which the English and Burgundians drove the royal family from Paris and made the Loire their natural haven, is largely responsible for the Loire’s significance.

The Centre-Val de Loire, the birthplace of the French Republic, is home to some of the most illustrious castles in the country, including Chambord, the Château de François Ier, Chenonceau and its Cher River arches, Cheverny, Villandry and its magnificent gardens, and Clos Lucé, the last residence of Leonardo da Vinci.

The Loire Valley was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000, together with the cathedrals of Bourges and Chartres and the collegiate church of Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre (placed on the route to Santiago de Compostela). The Loire Valley is the largest country to have ever been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Three regional natural parks, the Brenne, Loire-Anjou-Touraine, and the Perche, as well as significant forested regions, such as the Orléans Forest, the largest national forest in France, and the Sologne, add to this rich historical heritage. This area’s rich natural beauty also boasts several fantastic hiking trails and the 800-kilometer «La Loire à Vélo» cycling route.
