Bernese Oberland

The Bernese Oberland, also called the Bernese Highlands, is a region in central Switzerland.

It’s part of the canton of Bern its capital and it encompasses a portion of the Swiss Alps, including the Jungfrau massif, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Interlaken, Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, and extends west to Adelboden and Gstaad.

Interlaken

Interlaken is the gateway city into the heart of the Bernese Oberland. Interlaken is one of the oldest, best known, and most popular summer holiday resorts in Switzerland. To get to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Grindelwald, and the other small towns in the Jungfrau region, you will first pass through Interlaken.

Harder Kulm is a mountain that looms over Interlaken offering an amazing view of the Bernese Alps. A 10-minute ride on a funicular zips you up to the top of Harder Kulm for a stunning view of  Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau mountains as well as the Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a small town that is nestled in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. This is one of the most famous and the most picturesque towns in the Jungfrau region. Rustic houses, Swiss chalets, hotels, and restaurants all tumble together, while Staubbach Falls cascades down the sheer cliff next to the town.

Mürren

Mürren is a small town that is perched on a cliff, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley. From town, you have panoramic views of Mönch, Eiger, and Jungfrau, the mountains that dominate the Bernese Alps. From Mürren, you get one of the best views of this mountain range.

The Allmendhubel funicular starts in Mürren and ascends 500 meters up to a picturesque hamlet above Mürren. Once in Allmendhubel, you have gorgeous views over Mürren and the Swiss Alps.

Schilthorn is one of the highest peaks in the Jungfrau region and it is one of the best places to go for panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. From Mürren, a thrilling cable car ride transports you to the top to Schilthorn to enjoy 360° views from the mountaintop.

Gstaad

Gstaad is home to a large ski area in the Alps (220 km of slopes). The middle of the village features a picturesque promenade bounded by numerous shops, restaurants, art galleries, hotels and numerous designer label luxury shops.

Long known for its walking and hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty, the mountain air and ambiance attract guests year-round from around the world. Gstaad is also known for its ski and cross-country slopes and winter hiking trails higly appreciated by stars from all over the world. 

Gstaad is known for multiple regular events like the New Year Music Festival, Classical music winter series, the Snow Bike Festival, the FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour, the Swiss Open, the Menuhin Festival, the Christmas Market Circus and Hot Air Ballooning event.

The Bernese Oberland is a region mostly appreciated by its picturesque landscapes with countless mountain peaks, 800 lakes, world-class cultural and sporting events, great experiences, vibrant emotions and happiness, traditions and interesting customs being one of the most versatile regions in Switzerland. The slopes of the local mountains are also ideal for carving, telemarking, snowboarding and ski cross. The region has 350 km of cross-country ski trails, 200 km of trails for winter hiking and snowshoeing, and many other outdoor activities.
